Obituary

BARBER, GEORGE F. JR. - born in Knoxville, TN on Oct. 19, 1921, died peacefully at home on January 20, 2006. He graduated from Knoxville High School and attended the University of Tennessee. He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. in WWII. He owned and operated Duke's Tire and Battery Service in Knoxville. Subsequently he was employed by Osborne Equipment Company, Fidelity Sales, Manpower and Proctor & Gamble. After retirement he pursued his hobby of woodworking and did volunteer work for Ramsey House Plantation and Lakemoor Village. He was a 30-year member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and was a life-long Presbyterian, serving as an elder at Lake Hills Presbyterian Church. He loved people and people loved him. He was quoted shortly before his death, "Every day is a good day, some are just better than others." He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathleen (Kaddie) Dukes Barber; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Glen Farr; son and daughter-in-law George F. Barber, III (Sam) and Wanda; grandson Kelly Farr and his wife Tressa; grandson Jason Farr and his wife Jenny; granddaughter April Barber Smith and husband Shawn Thomas and great-granddaughter Sophie Farr. The family will receive friends at Lake Hills Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 22nd in the Fellowship Hall from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. The memorial service will be in the sanctuary at 6:00 PM, Reverend James McTyre officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Lake Hills Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 3805 Maloney Rd. Knoxville, TN 37920 or Montreat Conference Center, P.O. Box 969 Montreat, NC 28757.
